BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Located on the northern border of Tanzania, Kilimanjaro
is the highest point on the African continent. Kilimanjaro
is also the tallest mountain on earth that can be conquered
by individuals without any specialist mountaineering skills.
Indeed, with sufficient Preparation and ample perseverance,
the dream of summiting the Great Roof of Africa can become
a reality for almost any dedicated walker.
The eternal snows on its broad summit spread across three
peaks - Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira which tower over five ecosystems
and rise high above the African plains - one of the world's
great sights. This is a big adventure in East Africa and you
are sure to have a fantastic time on this great challenge.
If you decide to climb the king of all mountains, you should
know that the climb is non-technical in nature but is challenging
in that it offers a full mountaineering experience through
several habitats, from the plains through the forests, onto
Alpine meadows, and finally the glaciated summit. Kilimanjaro's
position just below the equator offers this unique opportunity
to experience so much in one expedition.
You will need to be physically fit and well-equipped. The
route can be cold and exposed at times. It is also mentally
demanding. Acclimatizing to the altitude involves keeping
a steady, slow pace and maintaining a high level of teamwork
and personal motivation. Many people claim that climbing Kilimanjaro
is the hardest, but the best, thing they have ever done in
their life.
